Coming Home - How we got here
Jason Marshall’s path to establishing Marshall Law Offices was paved with deep family connections and a powerful legacy. His father, John Marshall, was a respected and pioneering trust and estate attorney in Chicago, widely regarded as ahead of his time in the field.
When Jason moved to Rhode Island over 25 years ago, he was deeply missed by his Chicago family and colleagues. After gaining valuable experience working at several established firms, Jason finally decided to go out on his own, opening Marshall Law Offices in Rhode Island. John became his most enthusiastic supporter. Father and son shared a special connection in their work, speaking the same professional language and sharing similar approaches to client care.
Later, when John became ill, Jason and his sister Denise worked alongside their father—Denise as his paralegal and Jason assisting with various legal matters. John had always hoped that Jason would someday return to work side by side with him.
It wasn’t until after John’s passing in 2019 that Jason fully realized just how similar their styles truly were. During the grieving process, Jason would discover his father’s notes or hear from clients that his advice mirrored what John would have offered. These moments provided both comfort and confirmation that he was carrying forward his father’s exceptional legacy.
Jason’s practice naturally expanded back to Chicago when he helped close his father’s business. Denise officially joined the firm after John’s passing and now manages the Chicago location, while Jason frequently travels between offices. He often chuckles when clients approach him saying, “Your dad said you’d take care of us”—knowing that, in the end, John got his wish of creating a true family business.
Today, Jason feels he has the best job in the world. He loves what he does, maintains a close connection to his father’s memory, works alongside family, and provides clients with the same peace of mind that was his father’s hallmark. The Marshall legacy of trust planning excellence continues, strengthened by the personal bonds that brought Jason home.

Jason is past President and Director of the Estate Planning Council of Rhode Island, and a past member of the Professional Advisors Council at the Rhode Island Foundation. He is also a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association where he is active on the Probate and Trust Committee, and is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, active on the Estates and Probate Section.
Jason is involved in many community activities and has served as a board member and on committees for numerous charitable organizations. He is a past Chairman of the board of directors of South County Home Health (formerly VNS Home Health Services) and serves as pro bono legal counsel for The Tomorrow Fund. He also serves on the board of directors of South County Health (South County Hospital Healthcare System) and as Chair of its Professional Advisor Group and Chair of its Governance Committee.
